Tehran's climate comes down to a tug of war. Cold, dry air spills off the Alborz Mountains to the north. Heat builds over the Iranian plateau to the south. The result? Four distinct seasons and almost no summer humidity. That dryness changes everything. At roughly 1,200 metres above sea level, winter nights freeze hard. July afternoons regularly exceed 35°C (95°F). Yet the air stays so dry that both extremes feel manageable. The numbers alone mislead. Rain falls almost entirely between November and April. The dry season is absolute. June through September sees almost no rainfall at all, with monthly totals hovering around 3mm. The wetter months are mild and often beautiful. Spring stands out. Snowmelt from the Alborz feeds the city's parks. The foothills turn an improbable green. Tehran's summers bring relentless clear skies and sharp, clean light. Early morning starts reward. Long evenings on rooftop terraces do too. Most visitors are surprised. Tehran wears its extremes well. The dryness is the key. A July high of 35°C (95°F) with near-zero humidity sits more comfortably than the same temperature on a coast. A December high of 9°C (48°F) feels cold, not merely brisk. The mountains above carry snow from November through March. Darband, the popular hiking trail in the foothills north of the city, draws walkers every season except the coldest winter weeks.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
For cultural exploration, late March through May and the entirety of October are your clearest choices. Temperatures in those windows stay mild. Hours in the Grand Bazaar, the National Museum, or the Sa'dabad Palace complex feel comfortable rather than exhausting. The softer light of spring and early autumn suits Tehran's architecture well.
Hiking and Outdoor
Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts find May and September most rewarding. The Tochal cable car and the Darband trail corridor are fully accessible. Conditions underfoot are reliable. The Alborz altitude keeps air fresh even as the city below warms. October runs a close second. Autumn colour appears on hillside trees above the northern districts. That adds appeal.
Cultural Sightseeing
Travelers focused on cultural sightseeing without outdoor ambitions can reasonably add September and November to their window. Summer heat peaks in July and August. Tehran functions normally through those months. Still, midday excursions to exposed sites like the bazaar require patience. Shade and rest stops matter. Timing matters more.
Budget
Anyone managing costs carefully should look at late November through February. Demand drops lowest then. Accommodation offers most flexibility. Tehran sees relatively little international tourism in winter. The cold is real. It is dry, though, and rarely extreme at lower city elevations. The city stays lively year-round. A quieter tourist season does not mean a quieter Tehran.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Tehran.

Year-Round Essentials
sun hat and quality sunglasses
since the high altitude and dry air intensify UV exposure even in cooler months
reusable water bottle
This matters year round. The air stays dry. It will dehydrate you faster than you expect.
comfortable walking shoes with support
Pack them. Tehran's terrain shifts fast. Marble museum floors. Bazaar stone passages. Mountain trails above the northern suburbs.
universal power adapter
Bring one. Iran uses European two pin Type C and Type F plugs. The standard is 220 volts at 50 hertz. Check your chargers. Check your appliances. Make sure they can handle the voltage before departure.
lightweight scarf or shawl
Pack one. It works across seasons. Warmth in cooler months. Modesty at religious sites. Shade during summer afternoons.
spring (March through May)
Clothing
layer a light jacket over breathable clothing
Footwear
Comfortable leather or synthetic walking shoes handle the varied terrain well.
Accessories
compact waterproof layer
Layering Tip
since mornings can still feel cool even when afternoons are comfortably warm
Summer (June through September)
Clothing
Bring loose, breathable pieces. They must meet Iran's modest dress codes in public spaces., Lightweight cotton or linen works best, Full coverage is expected for all genders outdoors
Footwear
Lightweight closed shoes work. So do breathable walking sandals. These suit city days. Trail footwear wins for Alborz excursions.
Accessories
Sunscreen with a high protection factor
Autumn (October through November)
Clothing
a mid-weight jacket, layers that can be added or removed
Footwear
Sturdy walking shoes cover the gap. Warm afternoons. Cool evenings. Both sorted.
Accessories
a waterproof layer
Winter (December through February)
Clothing
quality insulated coat, thermal base layers, warm socks
Footwear
waterproof boots capable of handling slush and occasional snow
Layering Tip
Northern Tehran sits higher. It feels colder than the centre. Plan time there. Plan mountain trails. Dress one layer warmer than your instinct suggests.
Plug Type
European two-pin Type C and Type F
Voltage
220 volts at 50 hertz
Adapter Note
universal power adapter
Skip These Items
Leave it behind. Alcohol faces strict import restrictions. Customs enforces them. Skip them for street wear. They do not fit local norms. Lightweight trousers beat them anyway. They handle dry heat better. revealing or sleeveless tops Do not pack them for summer. Tehran's dryness means lighter layers suffice. Heavy gear slows you down.
